Houma/Terrebonne Independence Day 2010

July 3, 2010 is Here !

The planning for 2010's Independence Day Patriotic  Parade and Fireworks is in the final stage.  We started in September 2009 and have been working on a monthly basis to get our second annual event completed . 

Our theme this year will be                         "Veterans: Friends, Family, Freedom"

When:  Saturday, July 3, 2010

10:00 - 11:00: Memorial - Veterans' Memorial on Hwy 311

11:30 - 12:30: Patriot's Parade, Concord Plaza on St Charles (Route)

12:00 - 9:00: Entertainment and food, Houma Civic Center (Vendor Map)

5:00: Fun Run Registration (Race Maps)

9:30: Fireworks

We need volunteers to help!  If you, your church group, civic group, or if you happen to be a high school student who needs service hours let us know.  We have small items from set-up, take-down, manning booths, and entrances.  Send us an email (lshaffers@aol.com) or come to a meeting on June 28, 2010 at 5:30 pm at the Hercules Krewe Den at 1931 Coteau Rd, Houma LA.  

Monthly Meetings:   Every first and third Thursdays of the month at 4:30 p.m.at the Regional Military Museum, 1544 Barrow St., Houma LA.  All are invited to come and help us make this a great event.

Mission

The Mission of the Independence Day Committee is to provide a day filled with family fun focused on those who have provided service to our nation.   We want to give thanks to those who have given this service through protecting us through the police and fire departments and the military.  We are all proud of the efforts of these veterans and want to show that appreciation and show our younger citizens what service is all about.

News

June 25, 2010:  Houma Courier publish schedule of events.

June 23, 2010:  The Navy Band has agreed to play for a 45 minute session.  If you have not heard a US Armed Force's Band you are in for a treat. 

June 22, 2010:  Tab Benoit will be our special guest entertainer this year.  He will join in with Waylon Thibodeaux toward the end of the event between 6:00 - 9:30 pm.  Can't wait for the fun.

June 21, 2010: Make sure you check out our updates on HTV.  Each Tuesday night at about 6:30 we will have updates and information for the event.  Thanks HTV! 

June 20, 2010: Our sponsor list is final.  We still have many people and companies helping and providing support, but the tee-shirts, banners and brochures have been ordered.  Thanks to all those sponsors that have already helped and those that continue to want to make this a great community event.  Still looking for interesting raffle prizes from any interested sponsors.

May 19,2010: The Bayou Runners (BRASS) jumped in and have volunteered to conduct a two mile "Independence Day Dash" for adults and a half mile Kids Fun Run on July 3.  All proceeds go to the 2011Independence Day Committee.  They are also asking for each runner to bring a donation to the Blue Star Mothers.  Thanks for the help BRASS! Winner of the T-shirt contest was selected by the IDC.  Come out on 3 July, 2010 to meet our community's great young artists. 

T-Shirt Contest: If you have kids between 5 and 16 there is an art contest.  The top three will receive savings bonds in the amount of $50, $100 and $200.  The best piece of art will be used for this year’s T-Shirt.  Keep in mind the theme is “Veterans: Family, Friends, Freedom”.  The deadline to submit artwork is May 14, 2010.  For More Details see below or go to Kids-in-Motion Discovery Playhouse. 

 

 

Canes has joined as a sponsor of the event and we are thrilled to have them aboard.  May 11, 2010, come out and have dinner at Canes Restaurant on Martin Luther King Blvd.  Mention the Event name when ordering and part of the proceeds will go toward our effort for the July 3 event. April 5, 2010: Float Sponsors levels are reduced by Independence Day Committee.  See new prices.

 April 5, 2010:  Treater Band, Houma Community Band and T'Cainalle Cajun Band are confirmed for part of the entertainment.

April 2, 2010:  Anke Tonn, Nicholls University, joins groups to assist in the entertainment.  Glad to have you a helping out Anka!

April 2, 2010: Sharon Pontiff of the Krewe of Aphrodite, volunteered her time to help with the parade.  What a great help, thanks Sharon!.  

March 18, 2010:  Committee starts meeting twice a month.  1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at the Regional Military Museum, 1544 Barrow St., Houma LA. 

 March 1, 2010:  David Ellender, Castalanos Restaurant, and Wendy Jeffcoat, Kids in Motion, both have jumped in to help with the food vendors and kids' activities, respectfully.  What a huge help they will both be!
